Choosing a therapist is one of the most personal decisions you can make — and it deserves real thought.
Look for someone trained and experienced in the specific areas you're navigating. A therapist who specializes in trauma approaches your work very differently than one who doesn't. Logistics matter too — scheduling, format, and fee should work for your actual life, not just in theory.
Most therapists offer a free consultation. Use it. Come with questions. Notice how you feel during the conversation — not just what they say, but whether you feel heard, respected, and at ease. It's worth talking to a few before you decide.
And give it a little time. Sometimes it takes a session or two to know whether the fit is real. If something feels off, trust that. You are allowed to change your mind. Finding the right therapist is worth the search — because the relationship itself is part of the healing.

This is one of the most honest questions you can ask — and the honest answer is that it depends. Wish it was an easy answer.
The length of therapy depends on what brings you here, how long it's been affecting your life, the support you have around you, your insight and readiness for change, and how consistently we're able to meet. There's no universal timeline, and I won't pretend there is.
What I will tell you is that we won't just keep going indefinitely without checking in. We'll review your progress periodically, talk openly about how things are moving, and adjust our approach when something isn't working. Your goals guide the work, not a predetermined number of sessions.
Many clients reach a point where weekly sessions feel like more than they need. We'll naturally begin to space things out as you feel more stable and more yourself. Some clients check back in seasonally, a tune-up when life shifts or something new surfaces. That's not a setback. That's wisdom.
If you're coming specifically for EMDR to address a single trauma episode, research generally points to somewhere between 8 and 12 sessions, though every nervous system is different and we'll follow yours.
The goal was never to be in therapy forever. It was to get to a place where you trust yourself to navigate your own life and to know the door is open if you ever want to come back.
